NRDI as part of the big plan to manage well water sheds, it has embarked on promoting alternative livelihoods among the water shade communities. One of the enterprises being promoted is apiary farming or bee keeping, its highly beneficial-environmentally socially and economically. There are key reasons why bee keeping is an excellent practice for watershed areas: Bees improve pollination and ecosystems health because water sheds rely on healthy vegetation to prevent soil erosion and maintain water flow. When communities earn income from honey and other hive products, they are less likely to cut tree for firewood or charcoal therefore bee keeping encourages conservation of natural forests protection of catchment areas and reduced pressure on fragile ecosystems. Bee keeping strengthens climate adaptation by supporting plant and crop diversity, improving natural land scape restoration and creating income streams even during drought etc.
Therefore, such an enterprise has been identified as a high value option to be promoted among communities that are adjacent to such fragile ecosystems.
